Stress Management

As college students, there are so many things that can cause us stress. The simple fact that we are in college is stressful enough; meeting deadlines, studying, and being fully responsible of your actions is a big deal. Some of us work part/full-time jobs, we may have social relationships that might not be the healthiest, we might not be getting enough sleep, there are financial struggles, self-esteem struggles, lack of time, etc. The list can go on. Stress might seem harmless at first, but it places a huge toll on our bodies (mentally and physically). That is why it is important to recognize when we are stressed and practice stress management techniques to live a more fulfilling, healthier, and happier life. Remember, life is all about balance between what we love to do and what we are supposed to do.

Relaxation Techniques

There are different techniques that can help you manage your stress in a healthy way. Eating a balanced diet and exercising are just some form of stress management techniques that focus more on the physiological aspect, and when these are included in a daily basis, they can help you manage your stress and become a healthier individual overall. Other techniques that focus more on the cognitive and psychological aspect mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and yoga exercises. Mindfulness is the act of allowing yourself to be in the present and allow your emotions and thoughts to flow without judgement or trying to interpret them; rather, you just let them be and focus solely on the here and now. When you apply mindfulness in your life, you increase your capacity or ability to process thoughts, emotions, and sensations as they arise and are able to manage them better (Worthen & Cash, 2020).

In fact, in a systematic review done by Sharma to assess yoga as an approach for stress management, she found that stress is a major public health problem in the United States and therefore, stress management is important to implement. Yoga can be an effective tool to reduce stress. Practicing yoga was shown to have positive psychological and physiological outcomes related to stress management and therefore, it can be a great way to deal with your stress as a college student.
