Risk Factors

Many college students have a sedentary lifestyle and spend much of their time sitting – whether that be in class, in front of the computer or on the couch studying. Not engaging in physical activity can lead to a number of health issues.

"6 in 10 college students do not get the recommended amount of physical exercise." (Sparling, 2007)

It can be difficult for college students to find time to participate in leisure or physical activity, but it's important to get the weekly recommended amounts.

Not getting enough physical activity can contribute to:

  • heart disease

  • type 2 diabetes

  • high blood pressure

  • several cancers

  • anxiety and depression.

  • poor posture

  • obesity (CDC, 2015)

.

On the Scales

"3 in 10 college students are either overweight or obese." (Sparling, 2007)

The rates of obesity have increased rapidly among 18- to 29-year-old individuals. Engaging in physical activity can help reduce the chances of becoming overweight or obese which can improve overall health and well-being. (Huang, 2004)

Obesity-related conditions include:

  • heart disease

  • stroke

  • type 2 diabetes

  • sleep apnea

  • joint issues

  • certain types of cancer

There are many factors that affect the physical activity and exercise habits of college students. Some of these factors include sleep habits, their diet, social life, finding time outside of work and/or school, and other extracurricular activities. Making sure to get in the recommended amount of physical activity in a week can make a tremendous difference in one's current and future health.
